MAY 2009
.ABERDEEN SPL
34 - 02/05/09
Celtic
moved 4 points clear at the top of the SPL today with a 3-1 win at Pittodrie.
Chris Maguire gave the Dons the lead on 22 minutes but Celtic equalised
with a Gary Caldwell header just before the half-time break. Scott McDonald
added another two to his goals tally in the second-half to send the hOOps
fans wild in the Aberdeen sunshine. Rangers play Hearts at Ibrox tomorrow.
Click this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
.HEARTS SPL38 - 24/05/09
Celtic failed to beat Hearts and Rangers had an easy win
at Tannadice in the SPL showdown matches today. The dream of 4-in-a-row
is over and Gordon Strachan has lost his first SPL title. A sell-out
Celtic Park crowd had to endure 90 minutes of the same boring football
they've been forced to watch since a Robson penalty was needed to beat
St Mirren back in August. Click this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
.RANGERS SPL35 - 09/05/09
Celtic went two points behind Rangers with a 1-0 defeat
at Ibrox today. The comments from their sympathisers in the days running
up to the match had got to the referee and linesmen. Quick to book Paul
Hartley, they gave Celtic nothing, denying them a penalty and allowing
Rangers players that should have been sent from the field to get away
with deliberate and last man fouls as well as persistent time-wasting.

ticket and match stats.
APRIL 2009
.CELTIC RESERVES
MAKE IT 8-IN-ROW - 28/04/09
Celtic's second XI have won the SPL Reserve League by
beating Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox. SImon Ferry scored the vital goal with
a super volley into McGregor's net in the 70th minute to make it 8-championships-in-a-row.
Click this for the programme
and match stats.
.RANGERS DATE SET
- 14/04/09
The date for the post-split match at Ibrox against Rangers
has been set by the SPL. Celtic will go to Ibrox for match 2 on Saturday
9th of May with a 12.30 kick-off. Scott Brown will miss the match as
he serves a two match ban. Other post-split fixtures will be announced
directly after the SPL33 matches are played this weekend.
.FALKIRK SPL29 - 08/04/09
Celtic
beat Falkirk 4-0 in the re-arranged SPL29 match on Wednesday. The goals
were scored by Gary Caldwell, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Aiden McGeady
and Darren O'Dea. Click this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
.CELTIC
FANZINES - 04/04/09
Four
Celtic fanzines were on sale at Saturday's match with Hamilton. First
up was Issue 89 of the excellent alternative
VIEW. In this issue Warren Feaney gets his fud kicked
for stirring up trouble before the Northern Ireland World Cup match against
Artur Boruc's Poland, ex-Celt Jim McNally is interviewed and Celtic PLC
get a slagging for charging already hard-up fans £10 for a photograph
with the recently won League Cup. Click here.
More
than 90 Mins had their latest issue on sale for
£2. Their theme was justice for John Fallon, the unsung hero of
the Jock Stein era. John writes his own piece commenting on current Celtic
issues but in another article, by David Potter no less, we are told how
he Fallon spent 12 years at Celtic (no testimonial for JF) playing second-fiddle
to Haffey, Simpson and Williams but still managed to win two League Championships,
two Scotish Cups and two League Cups. Click this to see Issue
55 of Mt90M.
Welcome
to Paradise is the newest Celtic fanzine and is
produced by the group of Celtic fans known as the Jungle Bhoys.
They are responsible for the majority of the brilliant flag displays
at Celtic matches in Europe and against Rangers. Every penny made
through the sale of this fanzine is ploughed back into paying for
the displays that add to the stadium atmosphere. Click this to see
the current issue and find out more about the fanzine.
Not the View is
the longest running of the modern Celtic fanzines and this one is the
173rd Issue since they started way back in August 1987.Full of great
articles and fanzine-like features for just 200 pennies. Click this to see
Issue 173 of NTV and find out more about this fanzine.
.HAMILTON ACADEMICAL SPL31 - 04/04/09
Celtic
beat Hamilton 4-0 at Celtic Park today with goals from Georgios Samaras
(2), Aiden McGeady and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Hesselink hadn't scored
since last September and Samaras scored his last goal against Dundee
United on the 3rd of January and they both have Andreas Hinkel to thank
for his assists as he set up both of them to end their goal drought.
Celtic played some great football and scored four excellent goals. Click
this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
MARCH 2009
.DUNDALK FRIENDLY - 01/03/09
A
Celtic reserve team along with a couple of first team players played
Dundalk in a friendly match at Oriel Park on Sunday. Willie McStay's
team beat the Irish outfit 3-1 with goals from Ben Hutchinson, Michael
McGlinchey and Nicky Riley. Ex-Celt wee Joe Miller is assistant manager
at Dundalk. Click this to see the match
programme, ticket and game stats.
FEBRUARY 2009
.ST MIRREN SPL
27 - 28/02/09
Celtic
played like champions today for the first time in months. They destroyed
a St Mirren team that were playing well until they gave away a penalty
and had a man sent off. The penalty was missed by Vennegoor of Hesselink
but the midfield were 'on fire' and chipped in with 7 goals of their
own. Shunsuke Nakamura scored a hat-trick, Scott Brown scored two and
the best of them all came from Marc Crosas with a brilliant, swerving
shot from outside the penalty box. The victory keeps the Celts level
on points with Rangers and reduces the goals difference defecit to four.
Click here to see the match
programme and game stats.
.MOTHERWELL SPL26 - 22/02/09
When
Scott McDonald scored on the hour mark it looked like Celtic would take
all three points with a 1-0 win but Paul Quinn equalised for Well in
the 81st minute and the Champions had to settle for a draw. A costly
draw it was as Rangers crawled to the top of the league on superior goal
difference. That's a fair cop but John Boyle charging Celtic fans £25
- £10 more than he charged the fans of Crimewatch FC earlier in
the season - to watch pro-footballers fumble about on a pitch fit for
cattle is a recurring joke at Fir Park and should be investigated by
the SPL. Click here to see the match
programme, ticket
and game stats.
.RANGERS SPL25 - 15/02/09
Celtic
and Rangers fought out a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park today. It was boring
stuff that was not helped by a referee who couldn't make a correct decision
or tell time. Although he added only two minutes extra-time at the end
of the match, he officiated five substitutions and had to stop play at
least four times when players needed extensive treatment. The result
leaves Celtic in their usual spot at the top of the SPL. Click here to
see the match
programme, ticket and game stats.
JANUARY 2009
.DUNDEE UNITED CO-OP
CUP 28/01/09
The
semi-final of the League Cup against Dundee United at Hampden ended in
a 0-0 draw. Even another 30 minutes of extra-time failed to produce a
winning goal from either side. It came down to a penalty shoot-out to
sort out who would play Rangers in the final on March 15. Every outfield
player took a penalty. Only Glen Loovens and Lee Wilkie missed. Then
it was the turn of the goalkeepers to face each other. Both scored and
it was back round to the first two players to go again. Celtic transfer
target, Willo Flood missed his kick and Scott McDonald scored. The crowd
of under 20,000 watched for 120 minutes without seeing a single goal
and then they got 21 of them in about 5 minutes. That's fitba. Click
here to see the match
programme, ticket and game stats.
.HIBERNIAN SPL23 - 24/01/09
Celtic
beat Hibs 3-1 at Celtic Park today with a goal from Celtic captain Stephen
McManus and a double from Aussie striker Scott McDonald. Click this to
see the match
programme, ticket and game stats.
.DUNDEE FC SCOTTISH
CUP - 10/01/09
The
23,070 fans that turned up to watch Celtic play Dundee in the Scottish
Cup today had an early shock when the First Division side took the lead
in the 14th minute. The wet and windy conditions that had the fans hiding
in the back rows didn't help the Holy Goalie as he rushed from his goal
to clear from the onrushing McMenamin, he missed the ball completely
allowing the Dundee man to run on and pass the ball into the empty net.
Celtic came back and scored twice before half-time through Scott Brown
and Aiden McGeady, back after his two week club ban. Click this to see
the match
programme, ticket and game stats.
.DUNDEE UNITED SPL21 - 03/01/09
Dundee
United came from 2-0 down to grab a draw in Celtic's first SPL match
of 2009. Georgios Samaras scored twice for the hOOps before Dixon in
60 minutes and Feeney in 77 leveled the score. Celtic drop two points
but move to eight in front of Rangers. They play at Inverness tomorrow.
Click this to see the programme
and match stats.
DECEMBER 2008
.RANGERS SPL20 - 27/12/08
So it's goodbye to 2008. We'll be sorry to see it go for,
apart from the tragic deaths of Tommy Burns and Phil O'Donnell, it has
been a great year to be a Celtic fan. Playing in the last 16 of the Champions
League, the two victories against the Rangers that set up the historic
Championship win on the last day of the season at Tannadice and Rangers'
capitulation at Pittodrie on the same night, playing in the Group stages
of the Champions League for the third season in a row, the team's performances
(so far) to win 4-in-a-row and a victory at the Death Star in the last
derby match of the year are some of the highlights. Today, in deepest
Govan, heroes in green and white hoops beat the Blues at Ibrox, sent
us 7 points clear at the top and ruined their Christmas. In 58 minutes,
Scott McDonald collected a flick from Samaras, walsed past Broadfoot
and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner past the one-season-wonder
that is Alan McGregor. Click this to see the match
programme, ticket and match stats.
.FALKIRK SPL19 - 21/12/08
As
Aiden McGeady served match one of a two match ban imposed by the Club,
The Holy Goalie was playing match 160 of his Celtic career and Koki
Mizuno scored a Christmas cracker on his starting debut for Celtic.
It was an unusual SPL match in that Celtic's opponents attacked for
the entire match, a change from the usual ultra-defencive tactics we're
used to watching these days.
The final score was 3-0 but it was a lot closer for most of the game. Click
this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
.HEARTS SPL18 - 13/12/08
Celtic
only managed a draw against Hearts today but remain 4 points ahead of
second place Rangers after their draw in the early kick-off at Tannadice.
Click this for the programme,
ticket and match stats.
.CURRENT CELTIC
FANZINES
Issue 7 of the Jungle Bhoys fanzine Welcome
To Paradise was on sale at the Villarreal CF Champions
League match on Wednesday and Not
the View had a Christmas Issue on sale at today's match
v Hearts.
.GILES HERON DEAD
- 07/12/08
Ex-Celt Gil Heron passed away on 27 November 2008 in Detroit.
He was 86. The Black Flash, as he was christened by the Scottish press,
played only a few times for Celtic's first team but scored on his debut
in a 2-1 win against Morton. He played his last match for Celtic in December
1951 and by May 1952 he was released by the club and signed for Third
Lanark. After Thirds, he played for Kidderminster Harriers in England
before returning to the USA in 1954 to play for his original club, the
Detroit Corinthians. He excelled at many sports including boxing, cricket
and ice-hockey. R.I.P.
.TENERIFE INTERNATIONAL
MASTERS TOURNAMENT - 05/12/08
The
2nd Tenerife International Masters 7's tournament
was held in Spain on December 5, 6 and 7 2008. Celtic played in the over
35's professionals tournament. The ex-Celts team that included Tom Boyd,
Jim Duffy, Johan Mjallby, Darren Jackson and Charlie Nicholas were beaten
in the final by the Leicester City Masters. Click this to see the Masters
Tournament programme.
NOVEMBER 2008
.INVERNESS CT SPL16 - 29/11/08
It was 12 domestic wins in a row for the Hoops at Celtic
Park today as they beat ICT 1-0 with a Shaun Maloney goal. Rangers losing
2-1 to Hearts in an early kick-off means that the Champions lead the
SPL by 7points. Click this to see the programme
and other match stats.
Two Celtic fanzines on sale today - Alternative
View and Not
the View.
.ST MIRREN SPL15 - 22/11/08
Unless St Mirren draw a home tie and Celtic in the 4th
round of the Scottish Cup in January, the Hoops played their last ever
game at St Mirren Park today and ended with a 3-1 win. The Paisley side
move to a brand new stadium in nearby Ferguslie Park on 21 January 2009
and if they don't make the top 6 by the time the league splits, Celtic
fans will have to wait until next season to visit the new St Mirren Park.
Although the occasion seemed to be lost on the Saints fans, the Celtic
fans did not let it pass without comment as they celebrated before the
match with a series of banners to remember 'The
Spirit of '86'. Who will ever forget the last day of the 1985/86
season when Albert Kidd scored a double that left Hearts marooned at
Dens Park while Celtic ran rampant at Love Street to snatch the League
Championship - what a bunch of losers that lot are! Back then the scorers
for Celtic were Brian McClair (2), Mo Johnston (2) and the Maestro, today
it was Samaras, Nakamura and Sheridan that
scored the vital goals to keep the Celts at the top of the league and
on course for 4-in-a-row. Click this to see the
programme, ticket, teams and other match stats.
.WILLIAM ANGUS V.C. - A
HERO OF WWI
William
Angus VC is the most famous son of Carluke in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
On leaving school he was employed as a miner but escaped the rigours
of that work when he signed for Celtic FC in 1911. He played for the
Hoops during seasons 1912-13 and 1913-14 but, as he tried to get a
place in a strong Celtic team, his sporting days were halted by the
outbreak of WWI. During the war, William Angus won a Victoria Cross
for valour when saving a comrade under almost unbelievable danger.

.CO-OP CUP SEMI-FINAL
DRAW - 12/11/08
The draw for the semi-finals of the Co-operative Cup was
made today. Celtic play Dundee Utd, Rangers play Falkirk. Ties to be
played at Hampden Park on January 27 and 28 2009.
.KILMARNOCK SPL13 - 12/11/08
As second-placed Rangers struggled to a 0-0 draw with
Motherwell at Fir Park, Celtic's Cillian Sheridan was busy scoring a
brace against Motherwell at Celtic Park. Shunsuke Nakamura added another
in a 3-0 win that increases the gap between (simply) second best and
the 3-in-a-row SPL Champions to four points. Kilmarnock committed 19
fouls, two players had yellow cards and they didn't have a single shot
on target the entire game. Click this to see
the programme and other stats.
.MOTHERWELL SPL12 - 08/11/08
Celtic beat Motherwell 2-0 at Celtic Park today to move
5 points clear at the top of the SPL (2nd place Rangers play tomorrow).
Man-of-the-match Paul Hartley opened the scoring just before half-time
with a 20 yard half-volley past Graeme Smith and Scott McDonald kept
up his fine scoring form with his third goal in four games. As the second-half
progressed the team looked a little tired from their efforts against
Manchester United in the midweek Champions League match so Gordon Strachan
brought on Massimo Donati and Paul Caddis and gave a debut to Koki Mizuno.
Click this for the programme,
ticket, teams and other match stats.
.HEARTS SPL11 - 02/11/08
Celtic out-played and out-muscled Hearts at Tyncastle
today to stay top of the SPL and unbeaten away from Celtic Park this
season in Scotland. Gordon Strachan picked the best team for the job
by bringing back captain McManus and swapping three skillfull players
from Wednesday night's Co-op Cup tie at Kilmarnock with grafters in the
middle of the park. Out went Donati, McGeady and Nakamura, in came Hartley,
Robson and Sheridan. The game had hardly started when, in 7 minutes,
Maloney hit a 25 yard volley right into the heart of Hearts. 1-0 Celtic.
Gary Caldwell finished off a Celtic attack for Celtic's second just 13
minutes later and Hearts were finished. The
Celts had a chance to make it three when Marius Zaliukas was shown a
red card after 51 minutes for pulling Scott McDonald in the penalty box
as the wee Aussie skipped past him but Paul Hartley missed the penalty
(after another argument about who should take the kick.) Click here
to see the programme, ticket and match stats. Issue 79 of the Alternative
View Celtic fanzine was on sale at the match.
OCTOBER 2008
.KILMARNOCK CO-OP
CUP - 29/10/08
Kilmarnock
hacked their way to a 3-1 defeat against Celtic in the Co-Op Cup tonight
at a half-empty Rugby Park. They had four players yellow-carded and it
should have been more as a silky Celtic side, that included the skills
of Donati, McGeady and Shunsuke Nakamura, coasted to victory. Nakamura
was saved from further brutality by being substituted at half-time but
45 minutes were enough for him to score another sublime free-kick just
before the break. Scott McDonald scored Celtic's first and Man-of-the-match
Aiden McGeady scored number three. Click this to see the programme,
ticket, teams, scorers and other stats for the match.
.DERRY CITY 80TH
ANNIVERSARY MATCH - 07/10/08
Celtic
played Derry City as part of the Irish Club's 80th Anniversary celebration
tonight at the Brandywell. A strong Celtic team with several 1st team
players won the match 1-0 with a goal from Ben Hutchison. Click at this

SEPTEMBER 2008
.VILLARREAL C.F. CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE - 30/09/08
Celtic
lost 1-0 in the Champions League mach at El Madrigal on Tuesday night.
The Celts played well and held out until the 67th minute when Villarreal
captain Marcos Senna scored directly from a free-kick. For programme
collectors the game is a nightmare with no less than five programmes
available at the match. Click this link to see the programmes,
ticket, teams, scorers and other stats for the Villarreal v Celtic match.
.ABERDEEN SPL7 - 27/09/08
Celtic
went top of the SPL today (temporarily) thanks to a 3-2 victory over
Aberdeen. Two goals from Jan Vennegoor
of Hesselink and one from Scott McDonald got Celtic the three
points but they nearly had to settle for a draw with ex-Celt Charlie
Mulgrew scoring twice for the Dons to give them a 2-1 lead after 65 minutes.
Gordon Strachan brought on Aiden McGeady and he changed the result by
setting up Celtic's second and the late, late winner. Click this to see the
programme and match stats.

Issue
76 of the excellent Alternative View fanzine dropped through the door
of the fanzine's subscribers today. Twenty four pages of current Celtic
news, views and debate are include for just £1. Inside this issue,
the cowardly attack on Celtic coach Neil Lennon by two Glasgow bigots
is discussed at length, with the Sun 'newspaper' getting it 'in the neck'
for it's coverage of the cowardly assault. As the clamour of the Scottish
press to sell Shunsuke Nakamura hots up (as they do with all of our good
players) we are told that he will stay until the end of the season and
in part 2 of his interview Jim Devine MP answers questions on, amongst
other things, sectarianism in Scotland and why Catholic schools should
not be blamed for it. Click this to see issue
76 of the Alternative View or here to see every
issue of the Celtic fanzine.

2008/09 - 17/09/08
It
was a warm welcome back to the Wee Green Book (Not) on Wednesday night.
Why Celtic stopped printing the original WGB is a mystery but the publishers
of Not The View Fanzine have brought it back. The new version looks and
feels exactly the same as the original
"Celtic Football Club Guide" (as it was officialy known), only
the lack of the Celtic FC official badge on the front cover gives it
away. Inside, a 2007/08 season review, results, 1st team stats, loads
of colour photographs and much more are include in it's 107 pages for
only £3.

Manchester United, Villarreal CF and Aalborg BK of Denmark. Celtic begin

at this stage two years ago with a 2-3 defeat at Old Trafford and a 1-0
win at Celtic Park. Click this to see the stats
for the Manchester Utd matches. The hOOps have never played either
of their other two opponents in the Champions League but were knocked
out of the UEFA Cup in 2005 by Villarreal after a 1-1 draw at home and
a 0-2 defeat at El Madrigal. The stats

.FALKIRK SPL3 - 23/08/2008
Glen
Loovens and Marc Crosas made their Celtic debut in this game and Sean
Maloney debuted for a second time after resigning from Aston Villa.
The match was dedicated to Billy McNeill because it was exactly 50
years ago to the day that Cesaer made his Celtic debut. Billy
played for 17 seasons, making a record 790 appearances for Celtic and
was the Captain of the famous Lisbon Lions that won the European Cup
in 1967. As well as winning the European Cup, he won nine league championships
(in a row), seven Scottish Cups and six League Cups. He retired from
playing after winning the Scottish Cup Final against Airdrie in 1975.
He returned to Celtic as Manager (twice) and won another four league
titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup including a League and
Cup double in Celtic's Centenary season of 1987/88. Click this

its centenary. And what better way to commemorate a century of top class
football than to relive some of the highlights of the club’s history
together with some of the biggest teams in European club football? " Celtic
play Spurs then Feyenoord and Gordon Strachan said "the tournament
