DRYBROUGH CUP SEMI-FINAL
1972/73

Picture of the Drybrough Cup.

GLASGOW CELTIC versus ABERDEEN

2nd August 1972

Hampden Park, Glasgow

HIBERNIAN Drybrough Cup Final 04/08/73.

wrap-around cover

The wrap-around cover above was attached to the normal Celtic issue programme. A closer look at the scarfs in the picture will let our younger voyers see what the trendy Glasgow football fan was wearing in the early 70's. I had (still have it in a box in my attic) the Celtic scarf on the left and used it to hold my collection of enamel badges I was into at the time. They are still on the scarf and I must go and look it out someday. If the scarf in the picture was turned around the other way, it's a good bet that it would have a rubber-like transfer with the words 7 in a row and an image of the league flag. Note also that while most designs come and go with time, the old classics are always there - the green-and-white bar scarf.

inside cover of the wrap-around (left) and front cover of the normal Celtic issue

Above left is the inside page of the Drybroughs wrap-around cover showing a photo of the Drybroughs chairman Ross Gibbons. On the right is the front cover of the normal Celtic issue for that season 1972/73.

The programme has 12 pages (not counting the wrap-around) and cost 4p (FOUR PENCE!!!!!). Inside, Jock Stein talks about the game and withdraws his support for the tournament - "...... I am one of those who are not really enamoured of this kind of cup-tie football at this time of year." .

Big Jock also comments on the controversial no off-side rule being tried out in the tournament - "I shall say no more about the offside conditions of the tournament than to repeat that it seems strange that clubs who won their places through scoring goals are adjudged to need further assistance to do so." He went on to say "Aberdeen will be like ourselves - they will proceed as if the condition does not exist."
